Scuba Diving Computers - An Enthusiast's Most useful Friend
We've all heard about the fantastic fishing in the Red Beach or the Good Buffer Reef, but did you know there is a tiny area in the Philippines in which is often found a better selection of fish than in the complete of the Red Beach and that has a larger selection of delicate and hard corals than the Good Buffer Reef?
Some sixty miles to the South of Manila sit the islands of Verde and Mindoro and there is a particular current known as the Verde Island Passing which delivers huge levels of both nutritional elements and air and from the Pacific in to a little area of some 100Kms long and just 20Kms large at it's narrowest point. In this region it's estimated that some 60% of most known, shallow water fish species on the planet can be found.
Sometime ago the Philippines Government recognized exactly what a important source and selected the whole area about Vere Island as a protected marine reserve.
On the area of Mindoro, near the region that overlooks the Verde Passing was a really small community named Puerto Galera. Certainly by Western standards it was a village and next to it set the little fishing village of Sabang. The fishermen can no longer fish the rich pickings on the doorstep and turned their attentions into making a paradise for scuba divers.
This was when I first discovered Puerto Galera and I have observed it grow into one of the premier plunge resorts in the complete world. Fifteen years ago, Puerto Galera was all but impossible to get at from Manila and just the absolute most hardened diving courses in Hurghada scuba divers could venture there, but the government developed a motorway from Manila to the port of Batangas and nowadays there are typical bus solutions to Batangas from where you get a boat to Puerto Galera in about 45 minutes.
As more divers can see the magic of Puerto Galera so have the amenities and now you will find high quality resorts catering for divers from throughout the earth as well as restaurants for every possible style, bars and evening groups as well as live music and discos.
If you're a diver and need to escape the rat battle for a fourteen days you actually should try it. Traveling is never cheap but once you are in Puerto Galera you will likely invest less here than you would at home. The typical wage for an unskilled labourer is still below $1 an hour.
A study among visiting divers found that when some one has dived the Verde Island Passing they will get back on average five more times.
